Improving your energy label: what does roof insulation do?

Insulation starts with the roof, because heat rises.

Better insulation keeps your house warmer in winter and cooler in summer. It is also one of the measures that count towards your home's energy label. Exactly how much the label changes depends on the whole house and on the assessment, so I do not promise letters.

These are the four points I look at.

Four points on roof insulation and the energy label

1

The current insulation. Is there insulation already, what condition is it in and what is its value? Read about the Rc value of a roof.

2

Insulating inside or outside. During a roof renovation, insulating on the outside is often the smartest option. Read insulating a roof inside or outside.

3

Ventilation and vapour control. Insulation without good ventilation and a vapour control layer causes moisture problems. Read roof insulation and ventilation.

4

The schemes and conditions. Grants change, so check beforehand what applies now, see roof insulation grant 2026.

“A well-insulated roof is not a luxury, but an investment in comfort and energy costs.”

Fouad, owner of Astrodak Service

What you can expect

After insulating, you usually notice the difference in comfort and heating costs. The energy label itself is determined by an accredited adviser, so get advice from them on that.

First have someone look at what your roof needs

I look at the insulation and the condition of your roof and tell you honestly what makes sense. You get a fixed price up front.

What happens if you do nothing

1

High heating costs. Heat escapes through the roof.

2

A hot house in summer. Poor insulation also lets heat in, see a hot attic in summer.

3

Moisture problems. Poorly insulated roofs can cause condensation.

4

A lower label. That can count when you sell or rent out your home.

What you can do about it

First have the current situation assessed. A roofer does not only look at the insulation, but also at the condition of the roof covering.

Combine insulation with a roof renovation if the roof has to be opened anyway. Then you only pay once for the scaffolding and the work.

What you can do yourself

Check in the attic whether there is insulation and what condition it is in, see insulating the attic.

Ask for the material and the insulation value in a quote, see types of roof insulation.

Frequently asked questions about roof insulation and the energy label

Roof insulation is a measure that counts, but the label depends on the whole house. An accredited adviser determines the label.

During a roof renovation, because the roof is open anyway and you only pay once for the work.

Have the condition of the roof and the current insulation assessed. A leaking roof is better not insulated.

There are schemes that change every year. Check beforehand what applies now and read the article on roof insulation grants.
